a unique connection to nature
Pancake is an African-spurred tortoise and he came to Sunset Wildlife Connection as a baby in April 2021. Being a very small tortoise right now, Pancake is projected to reach a weight of 100-200 pounds. They are of course from Africa and are listed as endangered on the IUCN red list due to the destruction of their habitats and over grazing by livestock.
Strudel is a leopard tortoise and also came to us as a baby in August 2021. These tortoises are also from Africa and are best know for their uniquely doomed carapaces (the top of the shell) and beautiful black and yellow patterns. This colored pattern is one of the many many we can Pancake and Strudel apart.
These tortoises are built for a rough and hardy environment which makes them an easy pet to take care for when they are babies. Lots of these large tortoises are bought as young babies because they are so adorable. Most do not realize though that these tortoises grow to be so large. Within a year or two they grow out of their inside enclosures and must be put in large outside enclosures with both heat and space to dig. They soon become quite unmanageable for some people. Almost all exotic animal facilities will have at least one rescued large tortoise due to being a pet surrender. This is why adequate research is so important before adopting any pet for your house.
You can meet Pancake and Strudel at your next Wildlife Connection Encounter today. Pancake and Strudel can come together or separately.
