Shelob came to Sunset Wildlife Connection as a small spiderling. She is still young but growing quickly. Shelob lives up to her species calm demeanor and will make a great ambassador to help teach people about these incredible animals.
Tarantulas are strong hardy species and if seen in the wild, is a sign of a healthy environment. We expect Shelob to grow throughout the years to become as big as our hand. Even though we refer to her as female, we are still unsure her gender. We will not be able to tell the sex until Shelob is a little older.
You can meet Shelob at your next Wildlife Connection Encounter today.
*Shelob is a non-touch animal*
Age: Shelob was born sometime in 2019.
Favorite Toy/Enrichment: she loves digging in substrate and making web nets
Interesting Fact: The exoskeleton of a tarantula does not grow. As the tarantula gets bigger, it molts (sheds) its exoskeleton. Captive tarantulas are not fed for about a week or two after molting because their bodies are so sensitive, their prey animals could actually injure them.
